Safety first, then convenience, then looks. That is the order we think about garage doors, and it is the order these articles follow. Start with the sensor test; it takes a minute.

Repair & Maintenance
My opener is old and has no photo eyes. Can it still be inspected?
Yes. Older openers rely on contact reversal alone, so the board test carries more weight and is run carefully against the maker's procedure, along with the manual balance check, the force setting and the release. The report records what the opener has and how it performed. An opener built before photo eyes became standard is flagged for replacement in the report, since makers recommend moving off that generation of opener rather than treating photo eyes as a nice-to-have. What is the balance test and why does it matter so much?
With the door closed, the opener is disconnected using the red release handle and the door is lifted by hand. A balanced door rises with modest effort, stays fully open and holds still about a metre off the floor. The springs are meant to carry nearly all the weight so the opener only guides the door. A heavy or sinking door means the opener is lifting weight it was not built to lift, wearing its gear and making the reversal system less reliable. Garage Door Tune-Up
Why does the door need a balance test after being reset?
Balance shows that the springs are carrying the door's weight so the opener only guides it. After a reset the door is disconnected from the opener, raised by hand to the halfway point and released; a balanced door holds there with little drift. If it falls or shoots up, the counterbalance needs adjusting before the opener is reconnected, otherwise the motor strains and the rollers are pushed out of line again. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How long does it take to get a replacement section?
Sections are made to order for a specific model, size, position and colour rather than kept in stock, so there is a lead time from the manufacturer. It varies with the maker, the colour and the season, and the technician confirms the expected timing when the order is placed. In the meantime the door is left in a safe state, either in normal use or braced and closed, depending on the damage. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
Will new rollers make my door quieter?
Usually, and often dramatically. Rollers are the only part of the door that touches the track, so most of a door's clatter starts there. Moving from worn steel or bare plastic wheels to nylon ball-bearing rollers changes the sound more than any other single part. The rest of the quiet comes from the same visit: hinges lubricated, loose bolts tightened, the track squared so nothing rubs. Springs can still squeak on their own, and the technician can treat those separately. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Do the rollers get replaced with the hinges?
They are checked every time and replaced when they need it. The roller stem sits in a tube on the edge hinge, so when that hinge comes off the roller is already in hand, and fitting a new one adds a minute. A wheel that is cracked, flat-spotted or grinding on its bearing is the sort of thing that strained the hinge, so leaving it would ask the new hinge to carry the same load. Does a heavy insulated door need heavier track?
Usually the standard two-inch track handles a residential insulated door well, provided the gauge matches what the door maker specified and the brackets and hangers are properly fixed. Very heavy or oversized doors, and some carriage-style wood doors, are set up on three-inch track or on heavier-gauge two-inch. If a heavier door was hung on the light track from an earlier door, flexing and spreading follow, and the technician will say so. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What should I do while waiting for the visit?
Leave the door in the position it is in and stop using the opener. Move the car and anything else you need out of the garage by another door if you can, and clear the floor near the door so the technician has room to work. If a cable jumped because the door closed on something, leave the object where it was; it helps explain what happened. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Will the repair happen during the same visit?
When the cause is a common part carried on the truck, yes: capacitors, gear kits, sensor pairs, trolleys, wall controls, remotes and wiring are typical. When the part is specific to an older model and has to be ordered, or when the diagnosis finds a spring or cable problem that needs its own appointment, the door is left safe and the next step is agreed with you before the technician leaves. The motor runs but the door does not move. What has happened?
Four things are checked in order. The door may be disconnected at the red handle, or the manual lock may be engaged. The trolley may be jammed against the stop bolt at the end of the rail. Or the drive gear inside the head has stripped, so the motor turns without turning the sprocket; pale shavings under the cover confirm it. A broken spring also leaves a motor humming against a door far too heavy to lift, and that is spring work first. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Can a belt from any opener be used, or does it have to match?
It has to match. Belts are made in lengths for particular rails, so a 7 ft door rail and an 8 ft rail take different belts, and the teeth must match the sprocket's pitch. The clip or link that joins the belt to the trolley also differs between makers. The technician reads the model from the head unit's label and brings the belt made for it. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Can I keep my existing wall button?
The new operator comes with its own console, and the two usually go together because the console is designed to speak to that board and adds a light button, a lock button and sometimes a timer or a battery indicator. The low-voltage wire running to the old button can often be reused if it is in good condition, which saves running a new line across the garage. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
What happens to my current opener?
Its condition, intended capacity, rail position and connection geometry are reviewed against the proposed door. If it is suitable and included in the scope, it can be reconnected after the new door passes manual travel and balance checks. Limits, photo eyes, reversal response and emergency release are then tested for the completed system. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Can the new door use my old tracks?
A replacement is normally planned with track designed for its section thickness, rollers, weight and required clearances. Old track may look similar while having a different spacing, curve or support arrangement. The installer identifies every component and follows the selected door maker's compatibility information before proposing reuse. Treating panels and track as one system supports clean travel and correct perimeter positioning. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How are springs chosen for the new assembly?
Spring selection uses the completed door's weight, height, lift arrangement, drum geometry, and expected operating cycle. Reinforcement and windows are included in that calculation. After installation, technicians apply tension with proper winding tools and check manual balance through the travel range, adjusting both sides so cables remain even and the door stays controlled. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Why is spring and cable work handled by trained technicians?
Springs store the force that offsets the door's weight, and lift cables transfer that force through drums or pulleys. Installation requires the door to be secured, the correct components identified and tension applied with purpose-made tools. A trained method keeps the loaded system controlled while balance, cable seating and attachment points are adjusted together for the completed door. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
